Who is Robert Gasser?
Gasser grew up in El Dorado Hills, near Sacramento. He was small as a kid and played center field. He did not pitch full time until his sophomore year of high school. He idolized Oakland A’s lefty Barry Zito.
He bounced around in college. He pitched for New Mexico in 2018. In 2019 he went 14–0 at San Joaquin Delta College. Then he moved to the University of Houston. The Padres drafted him in the second round in 2021.
In August 2022 the Padres traded him to Milwaukee in a five-player deal for star closer Josh Hader. In 2023 he was named the International League Pitcher of the Year at Triple-A Nashville.
His debut on May 10, 2024, was a gem. He threw six scoreless innings against the Cardinals and walked no one. A month later he needed surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He missed more than a year.
He came back late in 2025. In 2026 he spent part of the year in Triple-A, then pitched his way into the Brewers’ rotation. In Game 3 of the NL Championship Series, he threw five scoreless innings at Dodger Stadium in a 6–2 Brewers win.
